Fishing Derby set June 7 by City Parks, Rec

Fishing Derby set June 7 by City Parks, Rec

After last week’s downpour, the fish are basically knocking on our doors … so why not go meet them at the pond?

The City of Newcastle Parks and Recreations says, “Join us bright and early on Saturday, June 7 for our Youth Fishing Derby — where the worms are wiggly, the prizes are plentiful, and the memories are waiting to be made.”

Organizers said head to Veterans Park Pond at 1300 Garrett Drive in Newcastle that day.

“This marks our fifth year for the fishing derby, and each year, we’ve witnessed a significant rise in the number of enthusiastic anglers.”

Participants can sign up by registering online at https://newcastleok. gov/services/parks-and-recreation/

FISHING: Prizes offered for biggest fish

There will be awards for 1st and 2nd place Biggest Fish in the following age groups: ages 6 and under; ages 7–10; and ages 11–15.

Awards will also be given to the fisherman who has the Longest Fish Overall, Best Dressed Angler (Yes, that’s your cue to show up in fishing flair!), and various giveaways thanks to the event’s sponsors.

City Parks and Recreation officials said participants should bring your tackle box, your best outfit, and your early- morning energy — we’ll bring the fun (and maybe a few fish stories).

Sponsors for this event are: Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, Tinker Federal Credit Union, Boing City Party Rentals, Norman Regional Health System, Pioneer Telephone Coop, Newcastle Contemporary Family Dentistry, Triton Foundation Repair LLC, The First National Bank & Trust Co., Community Bank of Oklahoma, Snow Enterprises, and Oklahoma Natural Gas.
