Pioneer Library System (PLS) invites readers of all ages to embark on an exciting summer of learning, discovery, and fun with the 2025 Summer Learning Challenge (SLC).

Designed primarily for children and teens, the challenge aims to keep students engaged throughout the summer, helping them return to school in the fall ready to learn — without the setback of summer learning loss. This year’s Summer Learning Challenge is underway at area libraries.

Participants can earn points in multiple ways, including reading, attending library events, completing activities through the SLC platform, and more. This year, PLS is focused on helping participants complete their personal 1,000-point goal while contributing to an ambitious community-wide goal of 18 million points. The Challenge is simple, one minute of learning equals one point.

All ages are encouraged to take part in the challenge — whether for their own enrichment or to help reach the community goal. Exciting prizes will be available for those who complete the challenge, including an Amazon Kindle for adults, a smart phone photo printer for teens, and a digital telescope for children.

In addition to reading and learning activities, PLS hosts a variety of engaging programs for all ages across its library locations. These include interactive performances by Inspyral Circus, creative workshops like Artsplosion and Cartooning, educational experiences with Wildcare and Mad Science, and lively entertainment featuring Funky Monkey and Spaghetti Eddie. Other programs will feature music, dance, storytelling, and hands-on learning experiences designed to inspire curiosity and creativity throughout the summer.

Every completed Summer Learning Challenge contributes to books donated to the community. For each participant who reaches their 1,000-point goal, PLS and the Pioneer Library System Foundation will donate books to community health organizations, helping to expand access to reading materials for families across the region. Additionally, studies have shown that 20 minutes of learning per day can keep learning loss to a minimum during the summer.
