Gertie Unruh is Senior of the Month

Gertie Unruh, 85, is the May Senior of the Month at the Newcastle Senior Citizens Center.

Unruh was born in Meno, Oklahoma. A special memory with her four siblings was when her dad took all of them to the circus. She said July 4th was always a favorite holiday time for everyone because it was also her mom’s birthday.

She says her greatest blessings are her husband “Leo,” her two children, and four grandchildren. Out of 60 years of marriage, she and Leo have lived in 21 places and they were not even in the military.

Amongst the “moves,” she worked as a cafeteria manager at Oklahoma Bible Academy, and she worked at a drapery business. Her special memories include watching the grandchildren play soccer. Her interests include cooking and working in her flowerbeds.

As others have stated, the most surprising aspect of growing older is that she cannot do what she used to do due to her “worn out” body.

She will tell you the key to a fulfilling life is being a Christian. To the younger generation, she says to “hang in there” when you run into hard times.

Jo Langford invited Unruh to come eat at the Newcastle Senior Center in 2015 after Leo passed away. She says she enjoys the friendships, her favorite meal of pork chops, the laughter, and a chance to talk — a lot.

The Newcastle Senior Citizens Center invites other seniors to join them at 504 OK-130 in Newcastle. The facility can be reached at 405-387-2100.

Meals are $5 each and include salad bar, entrée, drink, and dessert.
