Darlene Max, age 73, of Newcastle, OK, passed away at Norman Regional Hospital, Saturday, October 28, 2017.  Darlene was born on June 29, 1944, in Mustang, OK. She was the fourth of five children born to William Robert Willoughby and Lavon Alberta (Barton) Willoughby. Darlene graduated from Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City with the class of 1962.  One year later on Feb. 14, 1963, she married the love of her life, Edward Max. Together they raised two sons, Mike and Steven.

Darlene and Ed spent the first 14 years of marriage living in Oklahoma City before moving to Newcastle in 1977. She spent 30 years working as an administrative assistant for GMAC Finance and Insurance before retiring. Anyone who knew Darlene knew that she was full of life, outgoing and loved to laugh. For 40 years she has been a faithful and active member of Newcastle First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught at vacation Bible school, participated in the women’s Bible study group, and went on a mission trip. Darlene loved reading the paper, working in the flower beds, cleaning house, visiting with people who were sick and transporting them to and from doctor appointments.  She and her family loved going to the lake, where she appointed herself as the official boat driver. She especially loved supporting her children and grandchildren in all of their school activities and sports.  Darlene was an OU, OSU, Dallas Cowboy and OKC Thunder fan.

She is preceded in death by:

Parents, William and Lavon Willoughby;

Daughter-in-law, Brenda Elam Max;

She is survived by:

Husband, Ed Max of Newcastle, OK;

Sons,  Mike Max and wife Jessica of Blanchard,

Steven Max and wife Amy of Newalla,

4 Brothers, Bill Willoughby and wife Darlene of OKC, Don Willoughby of OKC,

Troy Willoughby of Midwest City, Lee Roy Willoughby and wife Linda of OKC;

A Sister-in-law, Linda Lu Max of Newcastle;

7 Grandchildren, Kaitlyn Hoffman and husband Kaleb of Ripley, OK; Hunter Mayfield of Blanchard,  Cordel Max of Blanchard, Holden Mayfield of Blanchard, Morgan Max of Newalla, Parker Max of Kiefer, OK,  Reese Max of Kiefer;

1 Great granddaughter, Gyntery Mayfield of Blanchard,

And several other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

 

Funeral services for Darlene will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Newcastle. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Oklahoma City. Visitation will be held at the Newcastle Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, from 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Newcastle FBC Mission Fund.
