The Newcastle Pacer is turning thirty-six and the public’s invited to join in the birthday fun. Free cake, refreshments and complimentary copies of the newspaper will be available Friday, May 9, from noon to 4 p.m.

The Pacer will also offer reduced subscription prices at the event.

Pacer Publisher Kory Oswald said he believes the paper has grown and changed substantially in the past year.

“We've expanded by adding the Education page to keep people better informed about what's going on at the school,” he said. “We're going to continue providing the specific news that they want and need while also bringing them statewide news on the Web.”

Oswald emphasized the Internet's importance as another area in which the Pacer is flourishing.

“The paper's grown digitally. We revamped the website and … we have a large audience on the Web,” he said.

According to Oswald, the website's traffic increased from zero to over 18,000 page views in less than one year.

“The paper, to the community, is a lifeline for information about the community and keeps people informed about the news that matters to them,” he said.
