Drivers trying to cross SH-37 at Country Club Road may have some help on the way.
Newcastle officials have gotten permission to build a stop light at the intersection, although the intersection does not meet the federal requirements for a stop light on a state highway, Newcastle City Manager Nick Nazar said.
Previous attempts to build a stop light at the intersection near Tri-City have stalled in the past because traffic levels on Country Club Road has not been high enough to meet federal requirements for a stop light to be put in.
Without meeting those federal requirements, federal infrastructure dollars could not be used to build a light at the intersection, even if the funds passed through the Oklahoma Department of Transportation first, Nazar said.
“We’ve had a huge number of letters and phone calls about that area, and about how dangerous that intersection is,” Nazar said. “It will also slow down traffic in the Tri-City area so that people in those shopping areas will have better access out.”
